The parents have built a fence around it to ward off any harmful influence on their children. False information about the reality is purposefully scattered and a changed vocabulary is introduced. Only the son has certain advantages, he may overcome the fence, penetrate outside and even gets a sexual partner. But the daughters are strictly protected. Goal: To bind the children to their parents forever. The fact that this closed space can't be paradise is already proven by the camera work of Thimios Bakatakis, which, with a few exceptions, remains static, just like life in the estate. Sometimes the heads of the characters are cut off, so that we get the impression that the whole film was shot with surveillance cameras (of course of the parents). Lanthimos ignores any connection. But we also don't need any additional information about where the events take place or why. The social criticism out of nowhere, reinforced by a grim humor, seems like a biological experiment. It's therefore completely unnecessary to learn more about the characters, because Dogtooth leaves no doubt that we are in hell. The film relies solely on the power of its images - quite different from the parents, who mistrust this power just as much as any other dictator.
